WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO IN VALLE MONGIA

THE CASTLE OF MOMBASIGLIO

A majestic castle which dominates the top of the hill and is surrounded by a park from which you can admire a spectacular panorama on the hills underlying. A ancient historical site , heavily damaged in the 16th century during the wars between France and Spain and then renovated in 1602. IS' developed on three floors above ground: on the first floor, the Napoleonic Museum. Finally, a square stone tower and a lower one incorporated into the building. Today the Castle is owned by the Castello di Mombasiglio Foundation, seat of the GAL Mongioie and the General Bonaparte Museum.

THE BONAPARTE GENERAL MUSEUM

Prepared inside the Castle , this Museum makes you rediscover the local history in an alternative way , through the eyes of the painter Giuseppe Pietro Bagetti. Inside of, uniforms, collections of lead soldiers and models of battles , but also forty-four copper engravings taken from the painter's watercolors and commissioned by Napoleon. They represent a geographical, economic, social recognition of this territory at the end of the eighteenth century, in a sort of virtual travel backwards , room after room.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF SANT'ANDREA

A Site that stores the remains of the Church of Sant'Andrea , an important cult building in the ancient residential area of Mombasiglio, demolished in 1923. You can still see what remains of the rectangular plan with a semicircular apse, the altar detached from the choir and the walls of the facade that formed the basis for the Romanesque bell tower, supported inside by a pillar or column.

ETRUSCAN STELE

Found in 1923 on the occasion of the demolition works of the church of S. Andrea, where it was reused, after a rudimentary rough-hewing, as a holy water stoup. The stele presents, within a rectangular frame, a relief depicted with a male character lying on a kline and a female seated on a throne. In the background, between the frame and the two figures, it shows an inscription in the Etruscan language, made with a rather clumsy execution: husi (e) vete zalle, interpreted by G. Colonna as a corresponding onomastic inscription, with inversion of the order of words, to the Latin formula Salvius Vetius Iunior. Typically Etruscan for the typology and iconography of the figured relief, the stele would refer to the burial of an Etruscan of probable Italic origin, perhaps from the Fiesole area, and would confirm the persistence of relations between northern Etruria and Liguria, also internal, already suspected from the middle of the seventh century BC and still active between the fourth and second centuries BC It is kept inside the Town Hall
